In 1961, before the tourist boom, before TV's, radios, and telephones reached Vallarta, the late Guillermo Wulff and his wife Nelly Barquet opened the quaint El Dorado as the first restaurant in town. During the filming of Night of the Iguana, El Dorado became the favorite hangout of the likes of Elizabeth Taylor, Eva Gardner, Richard Burton and Rock Hudson.  Delightful owners Carmen Porras E. [supporter of Slow Food cooking techniques] and Claudia Victoria, plus executive chef Mariano Valdés Ruiz, present menu of traditional Mexican family specialties located at Allende 344 in Centro. Named for the aromatic Jaliscan flowering tree found in the restaurant's courtyard, since 2003 this spot offers impressive pozole de camarón, plantain empanadas with black bean and cheese, ceviche Colima with baby scallops, shrimp and mango aguachile, duck [pato] tostaditas, nopal cactus pad salad with panela, tiny crickets [chapulines] sautéed in onion, avocado and tomatillo, duck paté morita, chicken breast stuffed with corn and ricotta, beef tenderloin in molé, pork Pibil with habañero and plantain, crispy duck carnitas Moreliana and cajeta flan. Seafood aficionados flock to this joint for their famous "All-You-Can-Eat Fish & Chips Fridays", and dishes like fresh octopus, whole sea bass and red snapper, garlic shrimp and great slabs of mahi mahi. Located in the heart of "Restaurant Row" on Basillo Badillo only two blocks from the ocean, this local's favorite has a feeling of dining with family, even when you are alone.  Located at Rivera del Rio Acute #204A in Colonia Remance, this old-style Mexican place run by owner Lola Bravo since 1997 and waiter Cuco López García, is brightly colored, featuring old indigenous recipes and sauces which are not offered often elsewhere. Unique Mexican plate, chiles en nogada or rellenos, pork with garlic ancho, orange pork loin, shrimp Giovanni, Puebla chicken molé, cream of peanut soup, tortilla soup, guacamole and panela cheese with chile de tenir [ancho] sauce. A place not soon forgotten, with artwork immortalizes Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, photos of Hollywood stars, hand-painted tables and placemats having clever information printed on their face. Reservations are recommended for this air-conditioned dining experience with no smoking allowed. Don't forget to ask about their cookbook, DVD, and classes by chef María de Jesús Casillas.  Since 1959, on the beach south of Río Cuale, owned by Alberto Pérez González [who's also a singer], this 5 Diamond award winner many years in a row is great for people-watching from this popular open-air spot with some tables on the tiki torch-lit sandy beachfront. Executive Chef José Guerrero and chef Jose García prepare Mexican/Pacific Rim fusion as breakfast oatmeal pancakes, fruit plate with cottage cheese, squash blossom omelet, scrambled eggs over smoked salmon puff pastry, crêpes with shrimp and mushroom and eggs Benedict. Lunch includes chicken or beef fajitas, seared ahi on foccacia, club sandwich, La Palapa ceviche with fresh coconut and mango, seafood enchiladas, lobster tacos, guacamole with panela, tortilla soup, spinach & jícama salad, plus dinners as pepper-crusted tuna, seared huachinango zucchini blossom tempura, pork tenderloin demi-glacé ancho and mushroom-stuffed chicken breast. This family owned and operated restaurant serves up some of the best casual dining we've discovered in Puerto Vallarta.
